Phil Connors (Bill Murray) a cynical reporter for WPBH in Pittsburgh is covering Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania for the fourth time. There are only two differences: His producer is young Rita (Andie MacDowel) and he continues to wake each day to the same Sonny and Cher song "I Got You Babe" and repeats the day over and over again.
Initially he becomes angered and abstinent, then he takes advantage of his knowledge of the day and the people in the town, next he attempts to end his life but nothing frees him from the same early morning wake up and repeating the same day. All of this has the potential to be silly and irritating to the audience, as is Murray's character, but in the hands of Harold Ramis the journey is hilarious and eventually heart warming. This is a perfect Bill Murray vehicle.
