Taylor Hackford is back … Producing and directing Jason Statham as PARKER. A formulaic action film with more misses than hits.
Statham is shot, stabbed, and beaten so many times, it's a miracle he has any blood left in his body. This continues throughout while PARKER seeks retribution against those who left him for dead.
On sheer willpower Statham keeps on coming back for more. He hooks up with real estate agent, Leslie (Jennifer Lopez) to help track down the old gang that double-crossed him. Leslie becomes little more than window dressing. Hackford tries to create some sexual tension but it just doesn't work. Lopez is angry over her recent divorce, and PARKER is madly in love with his girlfriend Claire (Emma Booth). This leaves little room for romance. Lopez's stiff performance is both flat and contrived.
Miscast bad guy Melander (Michael Chiklis) still reminds me of Curly from the Three Stooges. His tough guy demeanor is ridiculous and forced. It was really difficult to take him seriously in this role. Statham's basic character was right out of The Transporter, Crank, and "The Mechanic" exacting revenge and settling scores.
Too many aspects of PARKER were disjointed, or completely unnecessary… Just extra pieces to a puzzle that doesn't quite fit.
I had some high expectations for Jason Statham based on his previous efforts. Unfortunately, PARKER should have been a much better film.
