Witches is wonderful. It is the kind of fairy-tale that a child would dream up. All the evil witches in England gather in one hotel to plot the demise of children. Children to bad witches emit a pungent order and are easily detected by smell. The most evil and most powerful witch, played by Anjelica Huston, has a plan to turn all the children into mice. The plan is overheard by Luke (Jasen Fisher) at the annual witches' meeting but he is quickly smelled out and turned into a mouse. How a boy who is turned into a mouse outsmarts the lair of witches is a joy to watch.
Huston's performance is witty and delightful. She can act and look like a witch without make-up, but with the effects of Jim Henson's magic she is totally convincing as an obnoxious, self-centered leader of the witches.
This fine, energetic film has no dull spots; it moves from frame one to the end filled with danger, excitement and creativity. It will be enjoyed by children of all ages.
